Speculating through Speculaas is a collaboration between Brazilian-Swedish designer Lara Benevides, Groningen based artist Lola Diaz Cantoni and EAT Collective. During the project of 5,5 weeks, they will explore various subjects using the Dutch speculaas koekjes and its wooden molds as departure points, investigating connections between art, food production and cultural heritage.
The project serves as a catalyst to stimulate dialogues and knowledge exchange, creating a space for reflections about culture heritage, family traditions and rituals, food production and sustainability. Throughout their process, Lara and EAT collective will meet and connect with local creatives and food producers, learning from their practices and exchanging ideas around the topic of speculaas. They will also be hosting and organising a series of events during their process. The project will conclude during a two week residency at stichting WEP and an exhibition the last weekend of May (24, 25, 26).
Lara is a Brazilian-Swedish designer that holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Industrial Design from Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. During her MFA, she started to use food and eating as a bridge to open up the debate around different subjects.
EAT Collective is an open platform connecting food-related initiatives to artists and other practitioners. There, people can connect, share experiences, and explore knowledge in relation to food practices.

Speculating through Speculaas is een samenwerking tussen de Braziliaans-Zweedse kunstenaar Lara Benevides, de Groningse kunstenaar Lola Diaz Cantoni en EAT Collective. Tijdens het project van 5,5 week verkennen ze verschillende onderwerpen met de Nederlandse speculaaskoekjes en de houten mallen als uitgangspunt waarbij ze verbanden onderzoeken tussen kunst, voedselproductie en cultureel erfgoed.
Het project dient als katalysator om dialogen en kennisuitwisseling te stimuleren en ruimte te creëren voor reflecties over cultureel erfgoed, familietradities en –rituelen, voedselproductie en duurzaamheid. Gedurende het hele proces zullen Lara en het Collectief EAT lokale creatieven en voedselproducenten ontmoeten en leren van hun praktijk waarbij ideeën uitgewisseld worden rond het onderwerp speculaas. Ze zullen tijdens het proces een reeks evenementen organiseren. Het project wordt afgerond met een twee weekse werkperiode in stichting WEP met een expositie tijdens het laatste weekend van mei (24,25,26).
